OBJECTIVES: To investigate the preferences of older patients with chronic diseases for the medication review services in Shanxi, China.

METHODS: We used a discrete choice experiment to estimate older patients’ preferences for the following attributes: pharmacist type, medication review service method, service attitude, quality of information provided by the services, frequency of service, and cost per service. We analyzed the responses with a mixed logit model. We predicted respondents’ willingness-to-pay (WTP) for medication review services using scenario analyses.

RESULTS: 530 participants of 600 older patients recruited completed the questionnaire (completion rate: 88.3%). The attributes except cost ranked in the following order of decreasing relative importance: service attitude, service method, pharmacist type, quality of information, and frequency. We found respondents’ WTPs for good service attitude, high-quality information, and service in healthcare facility were 61.13, 18.94, and 11.13, respectively (CNY, 2019). They were less likely to accept medication review services that were of low quality, provided by remote methods, or by pharmacists with cold attitude.

CONCLUSIONS: This study identifies the factors that influence older patients’ preferences for medication review services and predicts their WTPs for services composed of different attribute levels. The results provide evidence for the improvement of medication review services and benefit the facilitation of patient-centered care for chronic diseases in communities of Shanxi.
