COST OF ACUTE ISCHAEMIC STROKE IN TURKIYE FROM THE SOCIAL HEALTH ORGANIZATION'S PERSPECTIVE

OBJECTIVES: Stroke is the second leading cause of mortality globally and the major cause of disabilities among the non-communicable diseases. The main aim of this study is to estimate the cost of acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) from the perspective of the Social Security Organization (SSO) of Türkiye
METHODS: This study used a combination of publicly available data, and expert opinion to estimate the direct annual costs to the SSO for the diagnosis, acute and post-stroke treatment and follow-up of acute ischaemic stroke patients. A survey of 4 HCPs was created to estimate resource utilisation per incident case. The questionnaire collected data on the type and frequency of resources used as well as the percentage of patients utilizing them. The responses were then analysed based on the reimbursement guidelines and prices set by the SSO. Epidemiological questions were also included to calculate the overall economic impact of the disease nationwide.
RESULTS: AIS incidence was determined to be 115/100,00 and prevalence 1150/100,000, resulting in 2026 an anticipated 103,252 new stroke cases, and 1,032,523 stroke survivors. The cost of diagnosis per person was 3,714 TRY with 91,7% of this being for radiological tests. The cost of treatment per person was 53,270 TRY with intensive care costs having the highest share at 60,3%. Lastly, the monitoring cost per person was 48,500 TRY with the highest share being for drug expenditures. The annual total cost per person was 105,484 TRY. Based on this information the total cost of AIS to the SSO for 2026 was estimated to be 60,969,638,628 TRY.
CONCLUSIONS: Cost of disease studies provide essential information to plan and provide healthcare services. Our estimations suggest that the cost of diagnosing, treating and monitoring AIS is approximately 4,5% of the health care budget of the SSO.
