PERCEPTIONS OF HIIT TRAINING AND ITS CORRELATION WITH QUALITY OF LIFE AMONG CHRONIC HEART FAILURE PATIENTS

OBJECTIVES: Chronic heart failure is a growing global public health concern associated with significant morbidity. Although the efficacy of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is well-documented, limited national data are available regarding patients' subjective experiences and the acceptance of this method. Our aim was to assess patient attitudes toward HIIT training, their perceived sense of safety, and their correlations with quality of life.
METHODS: A cross-sectional, quantitative survey was conducted with the involvement of 152 chronic heart failure patients using a questionnaire-based method. Demographics and quality of life were assessed using the SF-36 and the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ), while a self-designed questionnaire targeted the perceived sense of safety during HIIT, motivation, and perceived changes in health status. Descriptive statistics, two-sample t-tests, correlation analysis, and chi^2 (chi-squared) tests were applied during the analysis, with the significance level set at p<0.05.
RESULTS: Our results indicate a close correlation between the subjective symptoms experienced during HIIT and the patients' perceived sense of safety (p<0.001). Patients who could achieve maximum performance during the high-intensity intervals perceived significantly better improvements in their energy levels and sleep quality (p<0.001). The improvement in general well-being showed a moderately strong correlation with training motivation (r=0.607; p<0.05). No significant correlation was found between the presence of oedema (p=0.98) and the perception of physical exertion tolerance.
CONCLUSIONS: HIIT can effectively improve the physical capacity and quality of life of individuals suffering from chronic heart failure. The positive subjective experiences of patients and the improving quality-of-life indicators suggest that HIIT training can represent a long-term sustainable form of exercise, which may aid in preserving functional capacity and slowing down the deterioration associated with disease progression.
