IMPACT OF THE MYCOCARE PATIENT SUPPORT PROGRAM ON THE MANAGEMENT OF PATIENTS WITH PULMONARY NON-TUBERCULOUS MYCOBACTERIAL INFECTIONS

OBJECTIVES: Pulmonary non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections (NTM-PD) require complex and prolonged antibiotic treatment regimens. However, treatment-related adverse events (AEs) are a major contributor to poor adherence. The MYCOCARE patient support program was developed to assist patients with NTM-PD and improve their care pathway. This study aimed to assess the impact of MYCOCARE on treatment tolerance, adherence, and quality of life.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using data collected through follow-up telephone calls and patient self-administered questionnaires. Treatment adherence was assessed using the 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). Treatment tolerance and quality of life were evaluated using reported adverse events and the EQ-5D-3L questionnaire, respectively.
RESULTS: A total of 160 patients were enrolled in the MYCOCARE program, of whom 59 (36.9%) discontinued treatment during follow-up. The proportion of patients reporting at least one adverse event decreased over time, from 90.0% at baseline to 33.3% at Month 12. Among patients who discontinued participation in the program, adverse events led to treatment discontinuation in 12 cases (35.3%). At Month 12, 79.5% of patients demonstrated moderate or high adherence to treatment. Quality of life remained high and stable throughout follow-up, with no significant changes observed over time.
CONCLUSIONS: The MYCOCARE program may contribute to maintaining treatment adherence through improved management of treatment-related adverse events. More broadly, the program may enhance coordination among healthcare professionals involved in the management of NTM-PD, strengthen collaboration between hospital and community care settings, and improve patients' understanding of their disease and treatment.
