GLOBAL BURDEN AND TEMPORAL TRENDS OF HIP OSTEOARTHRITIS: FINDINGS FROM THE GLOBAL BURDEN OF DISEASE STUDY

OBJECTIVES: Hip osteoarthritis (hip OA) is an important cause of pain, disability, and healthcare utilization worldwide. This study aimed to assess the global burden of hip OA and evaluate epidemiological trends between 1990 and 2023 using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study.
METHODS: Data were obtained from GBD 2023 provided by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME). Global prevalence, incidence, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and years lived with disability (YLDs) attributable to hip OA were analysed. Crude and age-standardized rates were evaluated, and comparisons were made between 1990 and 2023.
RESULTS: In 2023, the global prevalence of hip OA was 0.48%, corresponding to 468.13 cases per 100,000 population, compared with 289.27 cases per 100,000 in 1990. The age-standardized prevalence increased from 0.40% to 0.43% during the study period. Global incidence reached 23.19 new cases per 100,000 population in 2023. Hip OA accounted for 14.84 DALYs and YLDs per 100,000 population worldwide. Women experienced a higher burden than men, with prevalence rates of 493.58 and 442.87 cases per 100,000 population, respectively. Disease burden increased substantially with age, reaching its highest levels among adults aged 70 years and older.
CONCLUSIONS: The burden of hip OA increased considerably between 1990 and 2023. Population ageing and longer life expectancy are likely major contributors to this trend. Given its growing impact on disability and healthcare demand, hip OA should be considered a priority area for prevention, early intervention, and long-term healthcare resource planning.
