ASSESSMENT OF FERTILITY AND INFERTILITY-RELATED KNOWLEDGE AMONG YOUNG ADULTS

OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to assess the level of knowledge young adults have about infertility, including its definition, causes, and treatment options. In addition, we examined their knowledge regarding fertility and optimal family planning. Furthermore, we investigated whether differences in knowledge could be observed according to age or gender.
METHODS: In our quantitative, cross-sectional questionnaire-based study, young adults aged 18-30 years participated (n=98), who had not yet given birth, were not consciously planning parenthood, were not infertile, and did not possess healthcare qualifications. Sampling was a one-time, non-random convenience sampling, and data collection was conducted online through a platform used by the target group, using a self-developed questionnaire. For statistical data analysis, Microsoft Excel and SPSS 26.0 software were used. In addition to descriptive statistical calculations, chi-square test, correlation analysis, and t-test were applied (p<0.05).
RESULTS: The mean age of respondents was 24 years, and every tenth participant was male. Women were better informed regarding the causes of infertility (p<0.05), and they also achieved higher average scores on the comprehensive infertility knowledge test (p=0.05). The age and gender of respondents did not influence whether they were aware of the optimal timing of childbearing (p>0.05). Knowledge of the definition of infertility showed no association with knowledge of the causes of infertility or factors influencing fertility (p>0.05). Age alone was not a determining factor in the level of knowledge related to optimal family planning (p>0.05).
CONCLUSIONS: The knowledge of young adults regarding infertility can be considered good in certain areas, but overall, regardless of gender and age, further dissemination of knowledge is needed about infertility, fertility, which factors influence fertility, what may cause infertility, and which factors may positively influence these. There is a need for standardized education and, consequently, unified knowledge on the topic.
