APPLYING THE LEAN ASSESSMENT PROCESS FOR THE EARLY HEALTH TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT OF A REAL-TIME PATIENT FEEDBACK PLATFORM

OBJECTIVES: To assess the feasibility of implementing a real-time patient feedback platform using the Lean Assessment Process (LAP), an early health technology assessment (HTA) framework to examine its potential utility, acceptability, and implementation considerations within maternity and musculoskeletal (MSK) care pathways.
METHODS: A qualitative feasibility study was conducted using the LAP framework to enable a structured early HTA of the platform. Healthcare professionals and patient representatives were engaged to provide multi-stakeholder perspectives. The LAP approach facilitated assessment of the platform’s value proposition, usability, and alignment with system needs. Participants explored the benefits of continuous qualitative feedback collection compared with traditional periodic surveys, as well as the translation of patient responses into actionable outputs, including reports and dashboards to support decision-making and service improvement.
RESULTS: The LAP methodology enabled a structured and systematic assessments of the key perceived benefits of an early-stage healthcare technologies by capturing participants’ perspectives on its value, implementation potential, as well as its alignment with clinical needs and stakeholders’ priorities. The framework also facilitated the identification of key uncertainties and implementation considerations, relating to workflow integration, digital accessibility, and organisational readiness and highlighted patients’ need for usability, accessibility, and data protection. Overall, LAP supported early identification of factors influencing adoption and system readiness.
CONCLUSIONS: The LAP methodology provided a structured and comprehensive framework for capturing insights from clinicians and patient representatives regarding the feasibility and acceptability of a digital patient feedback platform. The findings highlighted key implementation considerations and further refinement and adoption requirements for real-world evaluation to enhance patient-centred service improvement.
