OBJECTIVES: This study assesses the antimicrobial stewardship of newly introduced antibiotics (Ceftazidime/Avibactam, Delafloxacin, and Ceftobiprole) among hospitals in Jordan
METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study in which the antimicrobial stewardship program was assessed by reviewing patients’ records (using a pre-prepared checklist) who administered any of the mentioned antibiotics through 2022 and 2023 in three private hospitals in Jordan. A score was used to calculate the correct administration which included assessing the correct indication, dose, duration, and infusion rate.
RESULTS: Total number of included records was 239 records, the score of correct administration significantly varied between antibiotics (P-value <0.01), Delafloxacin had the highest score (2.60/4) followed by Ceftobiprole (2.26/4) while Ceftazidime score was (1.85/4). Infusion rate administration was not mentioned in the majority of records (72%), more than two-thirds of records had the correct dose (86.6%) and a correct indication (74.9%), while only one-third had an optimal duration of treatment (30.3%). The majority of records were prescribed those three antibiotics by non-infectious disease specialists (61.3%). Based on the CDC assessment tool, the total score for the hospitals’ systems adherence to the antimicrobial stewardship program was 80% as reported by the antimicrobial stewardship committee.
CONCLUSIONS: While the reported results indicated that the antimicrobial stewardship adhered by 80% to the antimicrobial stewardship program according to the CDC tool, the assessment of the administration of new antibiotics showed gaps that will require more serious measurements by hospitals’ administration to take when handling new antibiotics.
