REIMBURSEMENT SUCCESS ACROSS THERAPEUTIC AREAS: GLOBAL HEALTH TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT TRENDS WITH A FOCUS ON ONCOLOGY

OBJECTIVES: Reimbursement success across global HTA markets can vary substantially by therapeutic area, reflecting differences in clinical evidence, unmet need, disease burden, and payer priorities. In this research, reimbursement decisions across multiple global markets were analysed to explore how the likelihood of successful reimbursement differs between therapeutic areas, before examining oncology in greater detail as a high-priority area for HTA decision-making.
METHODS: Reimbursement decisions published in 2025 across 14 global HTA markets were reviewed. For each submission, data were extracted on products, reimbursement outcomes, and targeted indications. Indications were subsequently grouped by therapeutic area to compare reimbursement success across disease areas and support further analysis of oncology-specific trends. A targeted review assessed whether each market had a dedicated oncology HTA pathway, oncology-specific considerations, or no formal oncology-specific provisions.
RESULTS: 1,193 reimbursement decisions were analysed, covering 307 distinct products across 221 indications. Overall, 81% of decisions resulted in a positive reimbursement outcome; however, success rates varied substantially by therapeutic area, ranging from 60% in obstetrics and gynaecology to 100% in ophthalmology. The number of distinct products assessed also differed markedly across therapeutic areas, from 5 in obstetrics and gynaecology to 105 in oncology. Among oncology-targeted therapies specifically, the likelihood of a positive outcome was 97% in markets with dedicated oncology routes, compared with 77% in markets with oncology-specific considerations only, and 58% in markets with no dedicated route.
CONCLUSIONS: Reimbursement success varied across therapeutic areas and global HTA markets, with oncology representing the largest area assessed. The likelihood of a positive outcome differed based on whether a country had an assessment pathway with oncology-specific considerations. These findings highlight how therapeutic context and assessment processes may shape access, underscoring the importance of greater alignment to support more consistent and equitable patient access globally.
