OBJECTIVES: The aim of this analysis was to characterize the demographic and clinical features of adult patients receiving oseltamivir treatment for influenza and to evaluate age distribution, length of hospital stay, and comorbidity burden according to comorbidity levels.
METHODS: Electronic health records and physical patient files from 12,222 anonymized cases collected between 2016-2019 from selected centers in Türkiye were reviewed. The final analysis included 6,619 adult patients aged >18 years with an oseltamivir prescription/order. Data were analyzed using Python, with NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, and Seaborn used for preprocessing and visualization.
RESULTS: Among the 6,619 patients included in the analysis,4.35% were aged 18-24 years,8.30% were 25-34 years,8.18% were 35-44 years,12.59% were 45-54 years,21.03% were 55-64 years,23.21% were 65-74 years,9.66% were 75-79 years, and 12.68% were aged ≥80 years. The mean length of hospital stay among hospitalized patients was 14.93 days in the overall population. When evaluated by age group, the mean length of stay was 12.42 days in patients aged 18-49 years,14.65 days in those aged 50-64 years, and 15.99 days in patients aged ≥65 years. The mean number of comorbidities among patients with influenza was 3.07 in the overall population, while it was 2.24 in the 18-49 age group, 2.93 in the 50-64 age group, and 3.33 in patients aged ≥65 years. Furthermore, the mean length of hospital stay according to comorbidity burden was 20.57 days in the overall population. For patients with 0,1-4,5-9,10-14, and ≥15 comorbidities, the mean length of stay was 24.15, 18.49, 24.32, 46.82, and 54.68 days, respectively.
CONCLUSIONS: In Türkiye, the burden of influenza hospitalization is concentrated among older adults and patients with multiple comorbidities, who experience substantially longer hospital stays and greater healthcare resource utilization. These findings reinforce the importance of prioritizing high-risk populations in influenza prevention strategies.
