OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyze the percentage distribution of pharmaceutical turnover by ATC main groups in Estonia between 2012 and 2024, utilizing Statistical Yearbook data published by the Estonian State Agency of Medicines. The objective was to evaluate how the relative share of total medicine sales turnover varied across selected ATC main groups over time, with a focus on ATC groups L, A, and J.
METHODS: A descriptive analysis was conducted utilizing Statistical Yearbook data published by the Estonian State Agency of Medicines. Annual data showing the percentage share of each ATC main group within total pharmaceutical turnover were extracted for 2012-2024 and compiled in Excel without additional filtering, exclusion, or adjustment. Although all 14 ATC main groups were compiled in the dataset, the poster presentation focused on ATC groups Antineoplastic and Immunomodulating Agents (L), Alimentary Tract and Metabolism (A), and Antiinfectives for Systemic Use (J) due to their higher percentage shares and clearer year-to-year variation within the study period.
RESULTS: The following percentage shares correspond to the years 2012 through 2024, respectively: ATC group L: 18.8%, 19.5%, 19.9%, 19.8%, 19.6%, 20.4%, 20.7%, 21.9%, 23.8%, 22.5%, 23.0%, 24.2%, 26.0%; ATC group A: 12.1%, 12.4%, 12.3%, 12.3%, 11.8%, 11.8%, 11.7%, 11.5%, 11.5%, 10.6%, 11.6%, 13.0%, 14.0%; and ATC group J: 11.1%, 10.4%, 11.3%, 12.1%, 15.4%, 14.6%, 14.5%, 14.1%, 12.3%, 18.5%, 14.1%, 11.8%, 10.0%.
CONCLUSIONS: The 2012-2024 trajectory underscores an increasing therapeutic concentration within the Estonian pharmaceutical sector, with ATC Groups L, A, and J accounting for 50.0% of total turnover by the end of the study period. The steady growth of Group L highlights the rising financial weight of oncology and immunology portfolios, while Group A maintained a resilient baseline share and Group J followed a non-linear pattern, emphasizing the need for flexible budget forecasting.
