OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate healthcare resource utilization and associated medical costs among adult patients receiving healthcare services for influenza with oseltamivir use, and to examine the distribution of costs according to age, hospitalization status, comorbidity burden, and average length of hospital stay.
METHODS: This analysis used electronic health records and physical patient files from 12,222 anonymized patients collected between 2016-2019 from selected centers in Türkiye. The final analysis included 6,619 adult patients aged >18 years with an oseltamivir prescription/order. Healthcare utilization costs were calculated based on the Healthcare Implementation Communiqué published by the Social Security Institution. Drug costs were obtained from the Econalix database. Data were analyzed using Python, with NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, and Seaborn used for data processing.
RESULTS: When total costs were examined by age group, the total cost was calculated as 38.3 millionTL in the 18-49 age group and 39.8 millionTL in the 50-64 age group, while it was 75.4 millionTL among patients aged ≥65 years. According to hospitalization status, total costs were 134.0 millionTL for hospitalized patients and 19.4 millionTL for patients treated as outpatients. Among hospitalized patients, when costs were evaluated according to average length of hospital stay, the total cost was 38.5 millionTL in the 0-10-day hospitalization group, 74.6 millionTL in the 11-50-day hospitalization group, and 20.9 millionTL in the group hospitalized for more than 50 days. Mean total costs according to the number of comorbidities were calculated as 6,583TL in patients without comorbidities, 14,513TL in those with 1-4 comorbidities, 52,699TL in those with 5-9 comorbidities, 101,929TL in those with 10-14 comorbidities, and 203,737TL in those with ≥15 comorbidities.
CONCLUSIONS: Influenza-related costs increased with age, hospitalization, longer stays, and comorbidities; patients ≥65 years or with multiple chronic conditions drove disproportionate resource use and economic burden.
