EQ-5D-5L UTILITIES AMONG ADULTS WITH MYOPIA-RELATED LONG-TERM COMPLICATIONS: RESULTS FROM A REAL-WORLD INTERNATIONAL EUROPEAN SURVEY

OBJECTIVES: As myopia prevalence is rising globally, the burden of long-term myopia-related complications is increasing. This analysis aims to assess the impact of these complications on adults’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL).
METHODS: Data were drawn from a real-world, cross-sectional digital survey conducted among adult patients with myopia-related long-term complications in Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and the UK between July 2025 and April 2026 (Clinical Trial.gov: NCT06912802). Data collected included demographic characteristics, myopia status, and long-term complications. HRQoL was assessed using the EQ-5D-5L, supplemented with a vision bolt-on to capture the vision-related impairment. Utility values were calculated using country-specific EQ-5D value sets.
RESULTS: Among 106 patients (mean age 55.9 years, 58.5% female), cataract was the most common condition (60.4%), followed by retinal detachment (28.3%), myopic macular degeneration (24.5%), and open-angle glaucoma (27.4%). Legal blindness was reported by 9.4% of patients, and 60.4% experienced more than one condition. More than half of patients with open-angle glaucoma and retinal detachment reported problems with usual activities (50%, 56.7%, respectively) and anxiety/depression (55.2%, 56.7%, respectively). Among patients with legal blindness, 80.0% reported problems with both usual activities and anxiety/depression. Mean (SD) utility values were similar for cataract (0.847 [0.168]), open-angle glaucoma (0.843 [0.141]), and retinal detachment (0.841 [0.139]). Lower utility values were observed in patients with myopic macular degeneration (0.800 [0.217]) and those with legal blindness (0.643 [0.312]).
CONCLUSIONS: Myopia -related long-term complications are associated with substantial reductions in HRQoL, particularly among patients with legal blindness. These findings underscore the importance of interventions that slow myopia progression and thereby help to prevent the long-term complications that contribute to this burden.
