OBJECTIVES: Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN) is a common adverse effect of anticancer therapy that significantly affects patients, Health-Related Quality of life (HRQoL) and contributes to increased healthcare costs. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and pharmacoeconomic burden of CIPN and its impact on HRQoL among oncology patients receiving chemotherapy.
METHODS: A prospective observational cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Medical Oncology at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (DU), Chennai, India, from January 2023 to April 2023. A total of 120 patients receiving various chemotherapeutic agents were included. CIPN was assessed using the validated Self-Administered Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs (SLANSS) questionnaire. Health-related quality of life was evaluated using the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy questionnaire (EORTC-CIPN20). Pharmacoeconomic burden was assessed by estimating direct medical costs and treatment-related expenses associated with CIPN management.
RESULTS: The prevalence of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy was found to be 12%. Patients receiving antimetabolites and platelet-based chemotherapy reported a significantly higher number of peripheral neuropathy-related complaints (p < 0.001). CIPN was associated with increased treatment-related expenses, reflecting a measurable pharmacoeconomic burden among affected patients. Patients with CIPN reported poorer HRQoL scores, particularly in sensory and motor function domains.
CONCLUSIONS: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy represents a significant clinical and pharmacoeconomic burden among oncology patients. The occurrence of CIPN not only adversely affects HRQoL but also increases treatment-related costs. Early identification and appropriate management strategies are essential to minimise both clinical complications and economic burden in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
