A CLINICAL PROSPECTIVE STUDY ON DYSLIPIDEMIA IN PATIENTS WITH DIABETES MELLITUS

OBJECTIVES: Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia due to insulin insufficiency or it’s action, often both. Dyslipidemia associated with Diabetes Mellitus is a major contributing factor for cardiovascular complications and events also contribute to silent myocardial infarction. This research was conducted to assess the prevalence and different forms of dyslipidemia among patients with Diabetes Mellitus.
METHODS: A prospective observational study with a non-interventional approach was undertaken in a tertiary care hospital. Relevant patient information, including demographic and clinical characteristics, was collected from case records using a specially designed proforma. Lipid profile assessments were performed after obtaining written informed consent and were compared against standard guideline values. The incidence of dyslipidemia among the participants was then determined.
RESULTS: A total of 500 patients with Diabetes Mellitus were involved in the study. Different patterns of dyslipidemia, including isolated, combined, and mixed types, were observed among the participants. The incidence of dyslipidemia was determined to be 45.60%. Additionally, no significant variation was found between male and female patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with Diabetes Mellitus with dyslipidemia are at a high risk of cardiovascular disorders, including silent heart attacks. Regular lipid profile evaluation together with HbA1c monitoring may assist in reducing cardiovascular risk through early intervention. Therefore, lipid monitoring should be considered as a vital aspect of long-term diabetes care.
