OBJECTIVES: To assess patterns and PDD/DDD utilization of high-end antibiotics among ICU and Non-ICU patients.
METHODS: Cross-sectional observational study at a teaching hospital on prescriptions of high-end antibiotics among ICU and Non-ICU patients. Utilization of these drugs was analysed using WHO ATC/DDD methods.
RESULTS: Major indications for high-end antibiotic use included respiratory tract infections, bloodstream infections, febrile neutropenia, UTIs, and surgical site infections. There was a significantly higher PDD/DDD ratio among ICU patients compared to Non-ICU patients, implying that more intense doses are used due to severe diseases in ICUs. The top four antibiotics by PDD/DDD ratio included colistin, tigecycline, teicoplanin, and meropenem. In terms of disease-wise analysis, there was significantly higher PDD/DDD among intra-abdominal infections in ICU patients (p<0.05). Bloodstream infections had the highest dose intensity among all. The higher occurrence of reserve drugs in non-ICU patients was associated with increased disease burden.
CONCLUSIONS: The usage of high-end antibiotics among ICU and Non-ICU patients was mainly driven by indications and was characteristic of practice at a tertiary care institution. ICU patients required higher doses
