Description
This webinar will examine the growing use of AI in healthcare research and the widespread lack of patient and caregiver awareness of how AI informs study design, data analysis, and evidence generation. When AI’s role is not clearly communicated, patients/caregivers may feel excluded from the research process, leading to confusion, mistrust, and missed opportunities for meaningful engagement.
Aligned with ISPOR’s mission to advance health economics and outcomes research excellence to improve decision making for health globally, this webinar directly addresses a key strategic barrier: ensuring that decision makers are meaningfully included in research, particularly during validation. In the context of AI-enabled healthcare research, patients and caregivers are critical decision makers and end users, yet are often unaware of how AI influences evidence generation and outcomes. Reflecting ISPOR’s Top 10 HEOR Trends in artificial intelligence and patient centricity, the session will focus on transparent, patient-centered communication approaches. Speakers from patient advocacy, HEOR-focused research, and ISPOR Patient-Centered Special Interest Group leadership will share practical strategies to build trust, support informed participation, and actively engage patients and caregivers in the validation and use of AI-driven research.
Following the webinar, participants will be invited to complete a survey to gather insights on current practices for communicating AI to patients and caregivers and to identify factors that may enhance trust and engagement. Results from this survey will be discussed during a virtual open meeting (Patient-Centered SIG), and the collective insights will inform the development of a short publication outlining key findings and recommendations for improving communication about AI in healthcare research.
Learning Objectives
- Describe how AI is used in healthcare research and explain why patients’ limited awareness of AI-driven processes can affect trust, engagement, and informed decision-making.
- Identify key challenges and best practices for communicating AI’s role to patients and caregivers in a clear, transparent, and patient-centered manner.
- Apply insights from patient and stakeholder perspectives to support the development of survey-informed discussions and evidence-based recommendations for improving communication and trust in AI-enabled healthcare research.
