Description
Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS) is an established method for personalized outcome assessment that captures treatment benefit based on outcomes that matter most to patients. Rather than relying solely on standardized endpoints, GAS translates individual goals into structured, measurable scales, enabling the evaluation of meaningful change at the person level while supporting aggregation for group-level analysis.
This webinar introduces the core principles of GAS and its role within Clinical Outcomes Assessment (COA). Participants will learn how GAS enhances sensitivity to change, improves clinical interpretability, and provides a non-arbitrary framework for defining meaningful improvement or worsening. By aligning outcomes with patient priorities, GAS strengthens patient-centered research and can increase the relevance and perceived value of clinical studies for patients, caregivers, and other stakeholders.
At the same time, variability in GAS implementation can introduce bias and reduce reliability if not carefully addressed. This session will present practical, evidence-informed methods to standardize GAS within research settings. Topics will include structured goal elicitation, development of well-defined scaling levels, rater training, and approaches to scoring and analysis that support consistency across sites and studies.
By the end of the webinar, attendees will understand how to design and implement GAS in a rigorous and reproducible way, enabling personalized outcome assessment that is both meaningful to patients and robust for decision-making in clinical research and health economics.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the principles of Goal Attainment Scaling and its role in personalized outcome assessment within Clinical Outcomes Assessment.
- Explain the benefits and limitations of Goal Attainment Scaling, including its responsiveness in assessing meaningful change and its role in supporting outcome interpretability.
- Identify key methods used to standardize GAS implementation, including goal setting, scale development, and scoring approaches.
