OBJECTIVES: Implementing Value-Based Health Care (VBHC) in rheumatology, particularly for patients with inflammatory arthritis (IA), has the potential to significantly enhance patient outcomes relative to costs. This abstract outlines a pilot project aimed at transitioning to a VBHC system through a strategic framework involving key industry stakeholders.
METHODS: A team of VBHC experts collaborated with industry leaders to implement VBHC in IA. The methodology included (1) Team Training Program focused on VBHC principles and effective implementation strategies; (2) Patient Journey Mapping from diagnosis to treatment, remission, and follow-up care; (3) Gap Analysis of current clinical practices versus the ideal VBHC model; (4) Scoping and Ease-Benefit Analysis to prioritize activities with the highest impact and manageable implementation complexity.
RESULTS: Collaboration with industry stakeholders resulted in substantial resource allocation and expertise sharing, facilitating the development of integrated care pathways and advanced health information technology systems tailored to VBHC principles. Training on VBHC principles significantly improved industry teams' knowledge and commitment to implementing VBHC strategies effectively. Mapping the patient journey provided valuable insights into key touchpoints and revealed opportunities for optimizing care and improving outcomes. The gap analysis highlighted significant disparities between current practices and the ideal VBHC model, providing a roadmap for addressing these gaps. The ease-benefit analysis helped prioritize VBHC initiatives based on feasibility and impact, ensuring resources were allocated to the most impactful projects. An ongoing partnership model emphasized regular training sessions and continuous improvement.
CONCLUSIONS: The pilot project demonstrates the pivotal role of industry engagement in transforming healthcare delivery. By aligning interests and addressing diverse needs, the collaborative approach enhances patient outcomes and optimizes resource utilization. This framework showcases the critical impact of industry involvement in achieving high-quality care for patients with inflammatory arthritis .
