OBJECTIVES: People with hypertension often face challenges in managing their condition, which can affect overall quality of life (QoL). With the increased use of wearable technology (WT), health monitoring reinforces symptom and disease management. Measuring QoL scales can help understand the impact WT has on well-being.

METHODS: In the 2022 US National Health and Wellness (NHWS) database, self-reported use of WT for disease management was captured among a nationally representative sample (N=75,261). Those with a self-reported physician diagnosis of hypertension were included. Users of WT were propensity-matched to non-users using a 1:2 ratio on age, sex, and Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI). QoL measures assessed were the RAND-36 and Euro-QoL Five Dimension Five Level Scale (EQ5D-5L), with higher scores indicating better QoL. After matching, bivariate results between WT users and non-users were assessed using T-test and Chi-square tests. Responses are reported in counts/proportions or means with standard deviations (SD).

RESULTS: After matching, 7,770 adult US NHWS respondents were included in this study (2,590 WT users and 5,180 non-users). The mean population age was 62.16 (12.76) with 60.4% identifying as female. Among those who use WT, 1,872 (72.3%) reported exercising regularly compared to 2,876 (55.5%) non-users (p=<0.001). Mean BMI was higher among WT-users (30.33 (6.86)) in contrast to non-WT users (31.05 (7.61)) (p=<0.001). RAND-36 Global Health Score was also greater for WT-users (44.87 (11.87)) compared to non-WT users (48.78 (12.38)) (p=<0.001). Both the Physical and Mental Health Composite Scores of the RAND-36 conveyed a higher QoL among WT-users compared to non-WT-users (p=<0.001, p=<0.001, respectively). The EQ-5D-5L was also greater for those who use WT (0.798 (0.14)) than non-WT-users (0.775 (0.16)) (p=<0.001).

CONCLUSIONS: Individuals who were users of WT consistently showed higher overall QoL across all measures. This study highlights the potential of WT on health and disease management.
