OBJECTIVES:
This abstract aims to present epidemiological data on stroke in Bulgaria, focusing on mortality rates and the impact of ischemic stroke on the population, particularly among the elderly.METHODS:
The data presented in this abstract is derived from literature reviews and provides information on the number of stroke-related deaths, the mortality rate, and the impact of ischemic stroke on disability-adjusted life years (DALY). The data allows for an assessment of Bulgaria's stroke burden compared to the European Union and global trends.RESULTS:
The number of deaths from stroke in Bulgaria is 21,347, accounting for 22.72% of total deaths. The mortality rate for stroke in Bulgaria is estimated at 290 per 100,000 people, which is approximately four times higher than the European Union average of 70 per 100,000 people. Furthermore, the age-adjusted mortality rate is reported as 116.86/100,000 population, ranking Bulgaria 50th in the world. Ischemic stroke is identified as the primary cause of a significantly higher proportion of deaths and DALY, particularly among the elderly population in Bulgaria.CONCLUSIONS:
The epidemiological data presented in this abstract highlights the substantial burden of stroke in Bulgaria, with high mortality rates compared to both the European Union and global averages. Ischemic stroke, in particular, has a significant impact on the population, especially among the elderly. These findings emphasize the need for targeted interventions and strategies to improve stroke prevention, early detection, and management in Bulgaria. Public health initiatives should focus on raising awareness about risk factors, promoting healthy lifestyles, enhancing access to quality stroke care services, and implementing measures to address the specific needs of the aging population. By addressing these challenges, Bulgaria can work towards reducing the stroke burden, improving health outcomes, and enhancing the well-being of its population.Code
