OBJECTIVE. According to the CDC report 2021, approximately one in every 44 children in the United States has an autism spectrum disorder. The total predicted cost of autism in 2025 is around $461 billion in the US and prevalence has risen in the last three decades. Aim of this study is to measure the burden of disease and total cost of illness from autism in the US by using claims data. METHOD: The burden of diseases of autism is estimated based on demographic and health statistics available from 2016–2020, using the claims data available on one of the largest US managed care organizations representing about 15% of commercially insured lives and 23% of Medicare Part D beneficiaries. We will identify the number of patients each year in claims and track any change in the prevalence of disease. And from the number of patients, a measurement would be conducted for the cost of disease each year. The cost of disease identified by total medical cost and cost is not adjusted for inflation. RESULT: We have found that the total number of patients has increased in past few years, and the prevalence of autism in 2020 is 3 per 1000 population which is around 64,588 patients and by the claims data, we observed that total medical cost is $261 million in 2020. This data will help to identify statistical insights on autism and can help in research on autism in the healthcare industry. CONCLUSION: Autism causes significant developmental loss over the course of a person's life. Burden of disease will be able to help to make an effective policy. An accurate autism statistic must be planned to provide education and financial assistance to patients. Cost of illness data will help policymakers find ways to lower the economic burden of disease.
