Impact of Lunar Phases on Incidences of Cerebro-Cardiovascular Diseases

Objectives: Relevant scientific evidence supports the effect on ecological, meteorological, natural, and environmental geographical factors on the occurrence of cardio- and cerebrovascular diseases. Our aim was to assess the connection between lunar phases and incidences of cerebro-cardiovascular diseases.

Methods: A quantitative, cross-sectional study was conducted. Target group consisted of Hungarian patients who were hospitalized due to either cardio- or cerebrovascular diseases in 2019 (N=15,354). The following indicators were analysed through document analysis: socio-demographic factors, medical history, disease type, time of symptoms occurred and lunar phase. Descriptive statistics and χ2-test were calculated with Microsoft Excel 2010 and SPSS 26.0 (p<0.05).

Results: No significant correlation was detected between lunar phases and the number of diagnosed (NONSTEMI, STEMI) patients (p=0.521). There was no significant correlation between the time of symptom occurrence (based on lunar phases) and diagnosis, either (p=0.763). Date of onset of first symptoms and medical history (stroke, p=0.827; myocardial infarction, p=0.880; hypertension, p=0.071; heart failure, p=0.427) did not show a significant connection. Also, there was no significant correlation between the first day of admission (based on lunar phase) and gender (p<0.05).

Conclusions: It is important to highlight that during analysis, the date of first symptom occurrence of 6,451 patients were unknown, made it unable to associate it to the given day’s lunar phase. The exact date of hospital admission was known in every case; however, during data analysis we observed a few-day-long delay between admission and symptom development, which cause the difference of lunar phases linked to these two indicators. Based on our results, we concluded that there is no significant connection between lunar phases and cerebro-cardiovascular diseases’ occurrence.
