Harald H.H.W. Schmidt, MD, PhD, PharmD, is Professor at Maastricht University and Coordinator of the European REPO4EU programme. As physician, pharmacist and systems medicine researcher, his work focuses on redesigning medicine and pharmaceutical innovation around causal disease mechanisms rather than traditional organ- and symptom-based disease classifications. He develops network and systems medicine approaches that integrate molecular data, artificial intelligence and precision diagnostics to identify mechanistically defined patient subgroups and therapeutic opportunities, spanning drug repurposing and novel drug discovery. A central theme of his work is the high failure rate of current pharmaceutical R&D and the need to shift from treating broadly defined diseases toward mechanism-based prevention, diagnosis and therapy. He is the author of "The End of Medicine As We Know It" and works at the interface of biomedical science, pharmaceutical innovation, policy and health-system transformation.
