Highlights from the ISPOR 4th Latin America Conference

Jon Andrus, MD

“Traditionally, good public health practice addressed such factors as leadership and supervision, monitoring and evaluation, epidemiology, and strong laboratory support. Economic analysis and economic outcomes research must now be included amongst the guiding principles of good public health practice. This conference exemplifies that commitment. We at PAHO appreciate the opportunity to share our experience with the ProVac Initiative, and consider it of particular importance to see the Ministry of Health in Argentina support the Conference.”

- Jon Andrus, MD, Deputy Director, Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), Washington, DC, USA

“I found the ISPOR conference very interesting, with a broad range of courses, topics, and presenters.  This format allowed the participants to ‘shop around’ according to their own interests.  The roundtables were a great opportunity to share and learn from others.”

- Hector Eduardo Castro Jaramillo, MD, MSc, Executive Director, Institute for Health Technology Assessment (IETS), Bogotá, Colombia

“A very stimulating meeting, with the important presence of and dialogue with public and private decision makers, academia, consultancy as well as the industry.  We learned about the increasing institutionalization of HTA and Economic Evaluations to inform health policy in the region, with experiences ranging from regulatory frameworks, explicit prioritization processes, methodological advances in the decision rules and thresholds, and the range and importance of decision-making criteria.”

- Federico Augustovski, MD, MS, PhD, ISPOR 4th Latin America Conference Co-Chair and Director, Economic Evaluations and HTA Department, Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy (IECS), Buenos Aires, Argentina
