The 8th Chapter Annual Conference, 16-17 September 2019, Johannesburg, South Africa

The conference will include short courses, discussion sessions, and networking opportunities. The first ISPOR South Africa Chapter Think Tank will gather different stakeholders who will discuss changes and trends in the South African healthcare system. There will be an opportunity for students and researchers to showcase their research through poster and podium presentations. Chapter Conference-Universal Access to Health: The Role of HTA and HEOR

7th ISPOR South Africa Chapter Conference, September 16-18, 2018, Premier Hotel OR Tambo, Kempton Park, Johannesburg, South Africa

Presented topics included: Alternative Reimbursement Health Financing: Revenue, Strategic Purchasing and the Role of Health Technology Assessment (HTA), Challenges in NHI, Health Market Inquiry, The New Pharmacoeconomic Guidelines and other. More than 90 participants attended the event which included workshops focusing on technology and healthcare registries for better outcomes as well as HTA with real-world South African data examples.

South African Guidelines for Pharmacoeconomics Submissions

ISPOR South Africa Chapter Submits Comments and Recommendations to Department of Health

The Chapter has submitted comments and recommendations to the Department of Health on the review of the South African Guidelines for Pharmacoeconomic Submissions. The guidelines were reviewed by the Chapter Executive Committee and members during a meeting held on February 12, 2018. The Chapter trusts that the input impact the review of the guidelines, which were last published in February 2013. “The Chapter would like to thank Dr Richard J. Willke (ISPOR Chief Science Officer) and the co-chairs of the Policy Outlook Committee of ISPOR Health Sciences Policy Council for their input and guidance in the submission” – commented Lynda Woods, President of ISPOR South Africa Chapter.

On April 17, the Chapter is organizing a workshop to discuss: “What is New in Evidence-based Medicine? Current Controversies and Contingencies.” The event will explore the latest trends and applications of evidence-based medicine.

South Africa Chapter Conference and Pre-Congress Workshops, 16-19 September 2017


Partnering for Better Patient Outcomes

ISPOR South Africa Chapter is organizing an Annual Chapter Conference and Pre-Congress Workshops: 16-17 September 2017 (Pre-Congress Workshops) and 18-19 September 2017 (Conference) to be held at Protea Hotel Marriott Johannesburg Balalaika Sandton, South Africa. 

The theme of the conference is: Partnering for better outcomes. The closing date for abstract  submission is 15 August 2017. All presenters must be registered by 4 September 2017.

Short courses topics are the following:

---Systematic reviews in comparative effectiveness research

---Meta-analysis in comparative effectiveness research

---Introduction to pharmacoeconomic modelling

There are eight sessions planned to be presented during the conference. Lynda Woods, Harshal Thaker, Carolle Kinyua, Laura Sawyer, Shaun Nomame, Tiffany Naidoo, Shelly McGee, Ilse Truter and Johanita Burger are the main speakers at the sessions.

Consensus session: Takeaways and steps forward for HTA in South Africa will close the conference. 




ISPOR South Africa Chapter Workshop; August 2017


Complex Clinical Trials: Understanding their Design and Interpreting Results

The chapter conducted a workshop on August 2, 2017, facilitated by Prof Paul Reeder from the University of Pretoria "Complex clinical trials. Understanding their design and interpreting results."   

Members of the Board of ISPOR South Africa Chapter continued their engagement with the South African Department of Health Pricing Committee to continue the fostering of a good relationship as pharmacoeconomic evaluations become part of the approval process of new medications in South Africa."

Some of ISPOR Africa Chapter members attended the ISPOR 2017 conference in Boston in May 2017. The board member and previous chapter president Prof Jacques Snyman participated in the Africa Network forum presentation “Differential pricing in resource-constrained environments.”

Ms Lovina Naidoo had a poster accepted for presentation. Her abstract has been published in the ISPOR Value in Health journal. "It was my first international ISPOR conference and it was a mind blowing experience. I cannot emphasize enough as to how valuable this type of meeting is. I highly recommend it as real-world educational experience. The last plenary session was the most fascinating and I wish I could listen to it again. It was on "When do we really need randomized controlled trials." (Report from ISPOR South Africa Chapter.
