Enhancing Cost-effectiveness in Health Care Decision Making; the Role of HTA in Lower Middle Income Countries

ISPOR Ghana Chapter Educational Seminar was held on Thursday, 23 March 2017 at Kwame Nkrumah University of Sciences and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana. The main topic was: “Enhancing cost-effectiveness in health care decision making; the role of HTA in lower middle income countries”.

The seminar attracted over seventy participants from several professions of different academic background; all belonged to the University community. The main objective of the seminar was to bring students, health staff, the media and faculty to discuss the role of Pharmacoeconomics and outcome research for cost-effectiveness in health care decision making.

Prof. Ellis Owusu Dabo, Scientific Director, Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research (KCCR) opened the seminar. He touched basis on the need to create much awareness on Health Technology Assessment (HTA) as well as the need to be engaged in the research involving HTA, in order to achieve cost-effectiveness and efficiency as health managers.

Pharm. Ernest Attuquaye Quaye, secretary of ISPOR Ghana Chapter and Deputy Chief Pharmacist at Cocoa Clinic Accra was the thematic speaker. He stated that, the central goal in any healthcare system must be cost-effective for the patient and the health system itself. The efficient utilization of healthcare resources to achieve the desired goals defines value in healthcare. This can however not be achieved until decisions made are based on the evidence generated by experts through the proper economic evaluation tools in healthcare.

The seminar was funded by the ISPOR Ghana Chapter and was hosted by the Department of Health Policy, Management and Economics under the KNUST School of Public Health. (Reported by ISPOR Ghana Chapter)
