PURPOSE: The purpose of this workshop is to illustrate the importance of considering not only appropriate statistical methods, but also the capacity of the existing clinical evidence and realities of practice in performing and interpreting network meta-analyses (NMA) to support decision making.
DESCRIPTION: Due to the ever increasing burden of type 2 diabetes on society, there has been a continual investment in the development of new medicinal interventions. However, many interventions have not been directly compared in randomized controlled trials. In the absence of head-to-head trials, indirect comparisons can provide useful insights to clinicians and reimbursement decision makers on the relative efficacy & safety of a range of treatments. NMA is an extension of standard pairwise meta-analysis, simultaneously including multiple pairwise comparisons across a range of interventions. Although there are existing guidelines to aid in the performance and interpretation of NMA, e.g. ISPOR Task Force and DSU (NICE), there is still a lack of clarity in the approach to conducting and interpreting NMA, and assessing the validity of the underlying assumptions. Application in individual disease areas requires careful tailoring and pragmatism in the considered inclusion/exclusion criteria and interpretation of results. In this workshop, the discussion will focus on recent NMAs that were performed for the decision making about anti-hyperglycemic agents for national guideline development and reimbursement appraisals. In this case, output from NMAs led to initial treatment recommendations that were clinically contentious in the UK and considerations will be made about which elements of the approach could have led to these outcomes. There will be allocated time slots throughout the workshop for the audience to share their own experiences and ask the panelists questions.
