OBJECTIVES: Health-related quality of life is an important outcome in patients with colorectal cancer. Interpretations of these outcomes remain elusive. Recently have been publishedthreshold for clinical importance in some domains (2 functional scales and 2 symptoms scales) of EORTC QLC-C30 questionnaire which identify symptoms and health problems that require a health care professional´s attention. The objectives were to know the prevalence of patients who have scores above these thresholds and how many dimensions were affected at 1-year post-surgical management.  Giesinger JM et al. Thresholds for clinical importance for four key domains of EORTC QLQ-C30: physical functioning, emotional functioning, fatigue and pain. Health and Quality of life outcomes (2016) 14:87 METHODS: this is prospective study with 1-year follow-up period. Patients with colorectal cancer with non-urgent surgical management from 17 hospitals in Spain were included. Published thresholds were: physical functioning (PF) below 83; emotional functioning (EF) below 70; fatigue (FA) above 39 and pain (PA) above 25 points. EORTC-QLQ-C30 was sent at baseline and 1-year post-surgical management. All scores range from 0 to 100 (worst to best in PF and EF) and in symptoms scales (FA and PA) from best to worst. RESULTS: There were 997 patients included. Mean (SD) age was 67.4 (10.4) and there was a 63.2% of men. Mean (SD) scores at 1-year were PF: 83.7 (19.9); EF: 80.3 (21.6); FA: 25.1 (23.8) and PA: 16.3 (22.3). The prevalence rates for clinically important problems were: PF 33.2%, EF 28.0%, FA 21.9% and PA 28.9%. There were a 47.9% of patients without any problem, while 9.2% had the four domains affected. There were 20.8%, 11.9% and 10.1% of patients affected by one, two or three scales respectively. CONCLUSIONS:  With the recently published cut-off scores, our sample has an important symptom burden and functional limitations at 1-year post-surgical management.
