University of Rhode
Island ISPOR Student Members Share Experiences from a
Pharmacoeconomics-Related PharmD Rotation
The Healthcare Utilization
Management Center (HUMC) at the University of Rhode Island
offers PharmD candidates the opportunity to complete an elective
rotation in pharmacy benefit management as part of their
advanced practice experience. HUMC provides pharmacy benefit
management services to managed care organizations and state
Medicaid plans. Under the direction of pharmacoepidemiology and
pharmacoeconomics faculty members, students analyze pharmacy
claims data, learn about managed care and complete various other
projects.
The students learn to apply
efficacy and cost information to clinical decisions, an
important skill regardless of their eventual career path. PharmD
candidate Christine Hannan learned how guidelines and trial data
are used in the formulary process. She states, “I’m more
familiar with formulary reviews and I hope to apply this
knowledge during my residency next year.”
During the rotation, students -
who enter the rotation with various levels of experience - work
in small groups to complete projects. This allows the students
to have a more “real world” experience. This was initially a
challenge but as the project progressed, it became one of the
most valuable components of the experience. Tension was high as
dollar-focused and therapeutic-based approaches merged to create
a balanced product. Students also learned the basics of
healthcare management through an introductory module offered by
the Academy of Healthcare Management. Nine students earned PAHM
certification in the Fall 2004 semester.
