ISPOR GUIDELINES FOR THE USE OF SLIDES IN
YOUR PRESENTATION
THE FOLLOWING ARE SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO USE YOUR SLIDES EFFECTIVELY IN YOUR
ISPOR PRESENTATION.
Presenters dare not be the slaves of their visual tools. If they are, then
they are lost… and usually lose the audience mentally, if not physically by
walking out. Slides are not crutches- they are “enhancements” to help the
audience understand the presentation.
WHAT TO DO AND WHAT NOT TO DO WHEN PRESENTING WITH SLIDES:
DO’S
Do follow the ISPOR Guidelines for
Preparation of PowerPoint Slides for Podium Presentations (Speakers
often give too much detail in the slides so the audience cannot follow
them)
Do rehearse your presentation with your
slides
Do add originality
Do add color to your slides
Do make your remarks consistent with the
information on the slides
Do add variety
Do position your slides properly in your
presentation
DON’TS
Do not play with the pointer
Don not leave your visual aids in view too
long
WHAT TO DO IN CASE THE COMPUTER/LCD
PROJECTOR FAILS:
STOP YOUR PRESENTATION.
Your Podium Session Moderator and the
Audio Visual Volunteer OR ISPOR Staff Member will assist in determining
the cause of the computer/LCD projector failure.
The Audio Visual Volunteer/Staff Member
will inform you of the problem and help to correct it, if possible.
An overhead projector will be substituted
if the computer/LCD projector cannot be fixed immediately. ISPOR strongly
recommends that you bring a copy of your presentation on overhead
transparencies for this purpose.
Please tell the audience the problem, AND
CONTINUE WITH YOUR PRESENTATION. USE YOUR AUDIENCE HANDOUT AS THE VISUAL
AID FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE PRESENTATION.
REMEMBER, YOUR PRESENTATION TIME IS ONLY
FIFTEEN MINUTES, even if the computer/LCD projector fails.
