Purpose: The purpose of this Issues Panel is to present drug marketing and development issues concerning individualized drug therapy based on pharmacogenomics.

Overview: There is some evidence that using pharmacogenomics to individualize drug therapy may in some cases offer improved drug effectiveness and reduce side effects. However, because of the need to target pharmacogenomics, producers may see a limited and therefore unacceptable market and will not invest. On the other hand, pharmacogenomics could have the potential to create monopolies for producers and therefore the possibility of lucrative investment opportunities.
