The objective of this program is to demonstrate how managed care organizations are utilizing pharmacoeconomic information in their formulary decision-making process and the challenges these organizations frequently encounter when doing so. The challenges the pharmaceutical industry faces when providing pharmacoeconomic information to a large number of diverse customers with varying perspectives in the U.S. will also be presented. Different perspectives on issues related to the use of pharmacoeconomic information by U.S. managed care organizations will be discussed.

  The importance of pharmacoeconomic information in drug formulary decisions will be presented. Specific focus will be on how PBMs use such information to support formulary decisions within their organization and with their key customers.

  Concerns about using pharmacoeconomic information for decision making remain. However, patient incentive based pharmacy benefit structures provide opportunities for use of evidence based medicine and pharmacoeconomics to inform better decision-making.
6:15-6:45 PM Challenges and Opportunities in Providing and Communicating Pharmacoeconomic Information: A PhRMA Perspective

  Though, in general, each segment of the U.S. healthcare system (eg., health plans, PBMs, physicians) uses pharmacoeconomic information in their drug selection or formulary decision-making process, there is a wide diversity in the extent of such utilization and type of information considered important. Challenges the pharmaceutical industry faces in trying to meet the pharmacoeconomic information needs of these diverse customers will be presented.
