EVIDENCE BASED MEDICINE
What Does It Mean?
How Should Real World Evidence Be Used In Healthcare Decisions?
What Is The Future?
Co-Sponsored by
PhRMA Health Outcomes Committee and ISPOR
Sunday, May 21, 2006
5:00PM-7:00PM, Salon E & F / Level 5
Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Philadelphia, PA, USA
Prior to the ISPOR 11th Annual International Meeting |

This symposium will address issues on the use of evidence-based
medicine (EBM) in health care policy decisions such as reimbursement
decisions. The following issues will be addressed:
- Current and new definition of EBM
- How should different types of evidence-based medicine
evaluation be valued ( database research, retrospective vs.
prospective, meta-analysis, randomized clinical trials vs.
naturalistic studies, patient registries)
- How are cost-effectiveness evaluations in the EBM evaluation
process valued & are these evaluations compromised of different
types?
- How are research priorities determined in evidence-based
evaluations to promote improved patient outcomes.

EVIDENCE BASED MEDICINE - WHAT DOES IT MEAN?? |
| |
Speaker: David Eddy PhD, MD, Founder and
Medical Director, Archimedes, Inc., Oakland, CA, USA
Evidence-based medicine is the confluence of several different
streams of thought over the past 30-50 years. Currently it is
used for several different purposes, and no doubt it will go in
many different directions in the future. This presentation will
describe the past and present, summarize the unifying themes and
methods, and present a picture of the future.

AHRQ'S EVIDENCE BASED EVALUATIONS -RESEARCH PRIORITIES &
INTENDED USE |
| |
Speaker: Jean Slutsky PA, MSPH, Director,
Center for Outcomes and Evidence, Agency for Healthcare Research
and Quality, Rockville, MD, USA An important feature leading
to the successful uptake of effectiveness research is to ensure
the timeliness and relevancy of the evaluations for health care
decision makers. This session will discuss AHRQ’s priority
setting and communication with developers and users of
scientific evidence as a mechanism to meet these goals.

EVIDENCE BASED EVALUATIONS - DEVELOPING THE EVIDENCE
|
| |
Speaker: Eric D. Peterson MD, MPH, Associate
Professor, Medicine, Division of Cardiology, Duke University,
Durham, NC, USA
Observational analyses of community based registries serve
several key roles in the formation of our evidence base for
medicine. These include: tracking disease prevalence;
characterizing disease presentation; following trends in care
delivery; and identifying opportunities for quality improvement.
Observational studies can also provide insights into the
generalization of randomized controlled trials. By studying
unselected patients treated in real world settings, registries
provide unique insights into the comparative effectiveness, cost
effectiveness, and safety of specific therapeutics. This
presentation will address these various uses and provide
existing examples of these types of studies.

EVIDENCE BASED EVALUATIONS - USING REAL WORLD INFORMATION
AND ECONOMIC INFORMATION IN HEALTH CARE DECISIONS |
| |
Speaker: Peter I. Juhn MD, MPH, Executive
Director, Health Policy and Evidence-based Medicine, Johnson &
Johnson, USA In the context of today's health care
environment, this presentation will describe some of the
promises, challenges and concerns about the use of
evidence-based medicine. How can we ensure that EBM is not just
the latest policy fad but becomes a durable and effective tool
to enable high quality, affordable health care?
