Dr. Torrance is Professor Emeritus at McMaster University,
Canada, and Principal Consultant for i3 Innovus, a global leader in
health economics, outcomes and data analysis. He has been a leading
researcher, teacher and practitioner in the field of health
economics and outcomes research for over three decades. As a
methodologist, Dr. Torrance pioneered many of the methods used today
in health economics, particularly the use of utility theory to
measure preferences for health outcomes, and the concept of
quality-adjusted life years and their use in cost-utility analyses.
In addition he and his colleagues developed the widely applied
Health Utilities Index. As a teacher, Dr. Torrance has trained
generations of researchers and practitioners through courses,
workshops, journal articles, textbooks including the ISPOR Book of
Terms, and through mentorship of junior and senior colleagues and
students. As a practitioner, the results of studies conducted by Dr.
Torrance have laid a foundation for evidence-based medicine and
health policy and contributed to a more efficient allocation of
resources in healthcare. Dr. Torrance is truly one of the pioneers
in our field.
