ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

IN MEMORIAM – HARRY GUESS (1940-2006)

 

Harry A. Guess, MD, PhD, died January 1, 2006. Dr. Guess's career straddled pharmacoepidemiology and public health, and he strove to address practical issues facing the industry and clinicians with an academic and innovative approach to complex problems. He has made notable contributions to research on vaccines, the natural history of complex disease, development and validation of clinical trial endpoints and patient reported outcomes, and pharmacoepidemiology, in many cases setting the industry standard.

Over the years, Dr. Guess has been a mentor to numerous junior and senior scientists at Merck, UNC and other institutions, guiding their development and improving their understanding of epidemiological concepts.  His success in academia and research has been remarkable; his research endeavors were always accomplished while pursuing one of his passions:  teaching and advising graduate students.  For this reason, Merck is gratified to establish a scholarship fund for doctoral students in Harry’s name in pharmacoepidemiology at University of North Carolina.

NEUMANN TAPPED TO LEAD NEW POLICY CENTER AT TUFTS

 

Boston, MA -- Peter J. Neumann ScD, President of the International Society of Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) will join the Tufts University School of Medicine/New England Medical Center effective January 1, 2006 as Professor of Medicine, and Director of a new Center for the Evaluation of Value and Risk in Health (CEVR) at the Institute for Clinical Research and Health Policy Studies.

 

Dr. Neumann was formerly Associate Professor of Policy and Decision Sciences at the Harvard School of Public Health.  He will continue to be Adjunct Associate Professor at Harvard.  The new Center’s mission will be to assess benefit-risk tradeoffs in health care choices and to help decision makers target resources to improve health more efficiently and effectively.

RUSSIAN SOCIETY FOR PHARMACOECONOMICS AND OUTCOMES RESEARCH (ISPOR Russia Chapter)

 

The ISPOR Russian Chapter had a large delegation in attendance at the ISPOR 8th Annual European Congress in Florence, Italy.  The delegation presented a successful Forum on the current state and recent achievements of RSPOR.  In addition, ISPOR hosted a Russian translation of the short course, "Health Care and Reimbursement Systems in Europe", presented on Sunday, November 6, 2005.
