Reducing the Disease Burden of COPD in Singapore: Current Status and
Progress

Professor of Epidemiology, National University of Singapore, Singapore
COPD is a leading cause of death and hospitalizations in Singapore. COPD
mortality has decreased substantially but remains at high levels.
Anti-tobacco policies have reduced smoking prevalence, but current
management of COPD remains unsatisfactory. Innovative strategies to
reduce disease burden will be presented.

Cost of
COPD and Cost-Effectiveness of Tiotropium in Japan

During this presentation, the estimated cost of COPD in Japan will be
presented. The cost-effectiveness of Tiotropium, using the modeling
guidelines for COPD developed by Oostenbrink, Rutten-van Molken, and
McDonell [2002], will be discussed. Oostenbrink et al developed a Markov
model of exacerbations of COPD with and without medication.

Shuzo
Nishimura PhD
Shuzo Nishimura is currently a Professor of Health Economics at the
Graduate School of Kyoto University, Japan. He was formerly Director of
the Graduate School of Economics at Kyoto University. Dr. Nishimura is an
editor of the Japanese Journal of Health Economics and Policy. He was also
formerly the associate editor of Pharmacoeconomics. Dr. Nishimura received
his PhD in Economics at Kyoto University and was a research associate at
the Centre for Health Economics at the University of York in 1996-97. His
research interest includes wide ranges of health economics, such as
cost-effectiveness analysis of specific diseases, development of QOL
measures, and economics of health insurance. He plays an important role in
health policy making as a member of the government committee on health
care reform in Japan.
Masakazu
Ichinose MD, PhD
Masakazu Ichinose is a professor of internal medicine at the Wakayama
Medical University. He trained at the Tohoku University and was a visiting
fellow at the National Heart & Lung Institute in London. He has published
more than 70 peer-reviewed papers on asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD), and related topics. Currently, Professor Ichinose is an
Editor in Chief of the Pulmonary Pharmacology & Therapeutics and an Editor
in Board of the Respiratory Research. His major research interests are in
the pathophysiology and management of COPD and bronchial asthma.
Ng Tze
Pin MD, PhD
Ng Tze Pin is currently an Associate Professor of Epidemiology at The
National University of Singapore. He holds joint appointments at The
Departments of Psychological Medicine and The Department of Community,
Occupational and Family Medicine. He is the Director of the Gerontological
Research Programme. Ng Tze Pin’s degrees are as follows: MBBS 1976, MD
1997, National University of Singapore, MFPHM 1994, Royal College of
Physicians, UK. His major areas of interest are in geriatric and
psychiatric epidemiology, health service research, clinical quality and
outcomes evaluation, and quality of life.
