Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Program Planning Committee, we are very pleased to welcome you to Kobe, and to the First Asia-Pacific Conference of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research. As theme, we have chosen to focus on the role of pharmacoeconomics and outcomes research in Asia-Pacific countries.

The highlights in the program are the two plenary sessions. The first focuses on the role of pharmacoeconomics and outcomes research in health care decisions, and the second is an international comparison of health care reimbursement systems and the use of pharmacoeconomics in the reimbursement process. In addition, we are very excited to have two special sessions one on the Japanese health care system: structure, dynamics, lessons, and the other on data sources for pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacoeconomics studies in Asia-Pacific countries. Furthermore, we were impressed by the quality of the submitted contributions and are confident that presentations and debate on research projects will be of high quality.

We are extremely grateful to the members of the planning committee who have substantial time and energy in planning this conference. Finally, we would like to acknowledge the efforts of Marilyn Dix Smith, the Executive Director of ISPOR, and her highly skilled staff for their dedication to the success of this conference.

We hope that your stay is pleasant and that you have time to explore and enjoy the cultural treasures of Kobe.

Sincerely,

Isao Kamae MD, DrPH, Kobe University, Kobe, Japan (pictured top)
