Meet ISPOR Board Of Directors

Chris Pashos

Chris L. Pashos PhD - President (2008-2009)
In a career spanning 30 years, Dr. Pashos has served in leadership positions in academia, business and government. Currently vice president at Abt Bio-Pharma Solutions, Inc., he created and leads its Health Economic Research & Quality of Life Evaluation Services (HERQuLES) team. HERQuLES collaborates internationally with clinicians, researchers and policymakers to assess the use, outcomes, and value of medicines, medical devices, biotechnology processes, and other healthcare products and services.

Previously, Dr. Pashos was on the faculty of Harvard Medical School. At Harvard, he managed the acute myocardial infarction Patient Outcomes Research Team (PORT), one of the first PORTs funded by the United States government to study quality of care. He also helped to create and lead Harvard Medical School’s Bridges Program, which brought together government officials, academic experts, and business leaders to discuss and seek consensus on critical healthcare delivery and financing issues.

Having lived in North America and Europe and worked around the world, Dr. Pashos has designed and implemented prospective observational studies involving hundreds of thousands of patients. His “real-world” research expertise extends also to retrospective database analyses in numerous therapeutic areas, notably cardio-metabolic diseases, cancer and women’s health. This work has resulted in more than 60 indexed, peer-reviewed articles; more than 120 presentations, book chapters, and reports; and input to UNICEF, NIH, the U.S. Surgeon General, the U.S. Congress, and others.

Dr. Pashos is a recipient of ISPOR Distinguished Service Awards for editing the “ISPOR LEXICON” and “Health Care Cost, Quality and Outcomes, ISPOR BOOK OF TERMS”. He serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of Value in Health, and chairs the ISPOR Institutional Council and an ISPOR Patient Registry SIG Work Group. Earlier, he chaired ISPOR’s Communication Committee.

He holds a Ph.D. and M.P.P. in Public Policy from Harvard University and a B.S. from the United States Naval Academy.

ISPOR Vision Statement by Chris L. Pashos PhD
ISPOR has achieved much in its relatively short life thanks to the efforts of our members. Our Society’s continued success and increasing relevance around the world can be ensured if we focus on what I call (SR)2 and 3C:

(SR)2: Scientific Rigor and Societal Relevance - We must always work to promote the scientific rigor and validity of our research, while remembering that the value of that work increases when we present it in ways that effectively and efficiently meet the needs of typically skeptical clinicians and policymakers.

3C: Communication, Collegiality and Collaboration - The value of our field to the public health of our societies depends on our ability to foster a positive spirit of collegiality and collaboration both within our membership worldwide - reaching across academic, government, industry and research organization affiliation; and between our members and the clinicians, policymakers and others who use and depend on our work.

Meeting the challenges of (SR)2 and 3C requires multiple complementary actions that should be determined with input from our members. These could include:

  • Acceleration of ISPOR work groups that set standards for the conduct and interpretation of the diverse methodologies that we use.
  • Active promotion of work group findings and methods advances at our congresses and at training activities to build infrastructure to meet country-specific needs of our Asia-Pacific, European, Latin American, North American, and African colleagues.
  • Timely promulgation of advancements in appropriate methods and applications in our publications, notably Value in Health, plus other media to make those advancements accessible to practitioners, students and consumers of our work.
  • Support for our Student and Geographic Chapters to promote awareness, enthusiasm and knowledge of our field.

I would welcome the opportunity to work with and for you to advance ISPOR and further the importance of pharmacoeconomics and outcomes research around the world.
